The history
Eighteen years ago very few people were interrested in bonsai, and most of them were self-taught people who foundmeagre available news on the few booksprinted on the subject at that time.
Only after the first exhibition held in Trieste the interest for the small trees spread, and an ever growing number of people went to the few shops then selling bonsai looking for trees and most of all looking for notions that made them know the art of bonsai.
Base course have been held in our city for 13 years, and dozens of people approached this ancient oriental art, and a group of enthusiast people of one of these courses founded the "Associazione Giuliana Amatori Bonsai" in November 1990, a club that for many years promoted the diffusion of the art of bonsai through exhibitions, meetings and courses for beginners.
In the same period the "Bonsai Club Trieste" was born, and some of its members had already a large experience and knowledge of bonsai.
Year after year the number of the members of AGAB grew, until it became an established and well organized structure.
In 1995 both AGAb and BCT realized that two clubs were difficult to be maintained, and not very profitable, they decided to become one club that, not to displease any member of the previous two, took the name of Amatori Bonsai Trieste.
Since then the members of Amatori Bonsai Trieste, working side by side, have made the club grow to its present size, and they have made themselves appreciated not only in their own city but also outside Friuli Venezia Giulia displaying their trees in several exhibitions and competitions and bringing back large success. Is was also due to these acknowledgements that Abt had the privilege in 1996 of organizing the Exhibition of the bonsai clubs of Triveneto.
At the moment Amatori Bonsai Trieste has about 50 members. Social activities include many meetings in which both theory and practice are discussed; furthermore base courses for beginners are held by the club instructor, exhibitions trips and tours are organized, visits to nurseries, and a representatie of the club is always present at almost any major national exhibition.
